Hard Disk Drives and Materials Engineering Challenges

Mark T. Kiefz
Technologist
Advanced Transducer Development
Recording Head Operations
Seagate Technology
Minneapolis , MN

We will begin with a illustration on the operation of a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) then briefly highlight future recording technology challenges. We will then dig more deeply into a recent example of materials engineering for advanced perpendicular writers. Current HDD demand maximum write fields, sub-nanosecond rise times at nanometer head-media spacing. We will discuss how magnetically hard FeCo materials can be designed to meet challenging requirements. Micromagnetic modeling will be used to study the dynamics and expected performance impacts of these materials and structures. In conclusion, test results will be shown to support modeling predictions.
